Trying to compare log prices is difficult when load sizes differ between suppliers! If you can, convert the price to a cubic metre rate (£/m3), for instance an 80cm bulk bag holds a little over 0.512 m3 (0.8 x 0.8 x 0.8). If the price is £70, then the cubic metre rate is £136.71/m3 (£70 / 0.512). Our best price for hardwood works out at £81.95/m3.
What kind of wood is it?
We sell two grades of firewood:
Hardwood- a mixture of hardwoods such as Birch, Sycamore, Ash, Beech, Oak, Cherry and other species. Hardwood is often preferred for burning longer and hotter, depending on the species.
Budget Hardwood/ Softwood mix - a mixture which contains any of the above species plus Poplar, Willow (technically hardwood species) and various softwoods e.g. Pine, Spruce. Larch etc. Any wood burns and gives heat if it is dry - this is a great choice for those on a budget. Softwood species can be resinous and may necessitate more frequent chimney sweeping.
Is it dry?
Our wood is fully seasoned and supplied ready to burn. We operate a "billet"system, popular on the Continent, where logs are split and stacked months before cutting to length. This ensures quick and consistent drying as all the billets are a similar diameter. We aim for 15-20% moisture content; just ask for a test on delivery!
Where does our wood come from?
Most of our firewood comes from undermanaged woods in Yorkshire which are thinned carefully by our team to promote tree growth and species diversity. We take great pride in the work we do in woods to preserve habitat and provide timber supplies for the future. The remainder of our wood comes from domestic and commercial tree work. We can usually identify which woodland area each delivery comes from, by its position in the yard.
Is it sustainable?
We obtain felling licences where necessary from the Forestry Commission and produce management plans to ensure the work is carried out sustainably.
Demand for home grown timber is increasing for logs, biomass and saw timber. We often use small roundwood for logs, which is very often discarded in commercial forestry operations, in order to minimise waste. This is what has always been traditionally used for firewood, because it cannot be sawn into something more valuable. In each order we try to incorporate a good mix of round and split logs in a variety of species.
How big are the logs?
Our logs are suitable for log burners, open fires, multi-fuel burners and wood stoves. Our standard cutting size is 9" which is great for small to medium stoves, but we can cut any size to order to suit even the largest open fire or boiler.
Mixed offcuts are often available which are great for fire-pits, pizza ovens and chimineas.
We also supply chopping blocks for you to make your own kindling. They are cut from the bottom of trees, especially birch, where the grain is twisted and less likely to split.
How will the logs be delivered?
The most cost effective way to buy our logs is in loose tipper loads; our price per m3 is one of the best in the area. A full load of 3.6 m3 is equivalent to around 5 bulk bags, and a half load of 1.8 m3, about 2.5 bulk bags.
We will try to tip as close to your store or garage as possible; if you need help with stacking, please phone to discuss.
Many of our customers take their deliveries in large nets, which are easy to handle and store, but they do create plastic waste. If nets work best for you, ask about how they can be reused: we make a small refund for nets returned in good condition! Our nets measure 85cm x 52cm, which hold over 1.5 times as many logs as a standard net. All net orders are carried and stacked in your store (great for back lanes in York!), so you can spend Saturday morning doing something less strenuous!
We deliver logs in York, Selby, Goole, Howden, Holme on Spalding Moor, Pontefract, Askern and surrounding areas, in a 5 tonne tipper, 4 x 4 pickup and trailer, and a small van. Let us know if your access restricts the type of vehicle used.
When will they be delivered?
We aim to deliver all standard orders within a week. We try where possible to fit in with your schedule, including Saturdays and weekday evenings, but if you are out you can leave instructions for stacking/ unloading.

If you have firewood which you are unable to cut at home (perhaps some large pieces left over from a tree removal), we will be happy to cut it up into usable pieces when we deliver your log order, by prior arrangement.
If you like to saw your own wood, we can supply loads of approx 2 tonnes and 4 tonnes fresh felled round timber in manageable size. We can also supply split billets, which season quickly and are easy to handle, by the pallet load. Phone for a price delivered to your address.
If you have a large wood-fuelled boiler, your own firewood business or you just prefer to do-it-yourself, contact us for supplies of bulk hardwood or softwood round timber by the wagon-load. We fell around 3000 tonnes of firewood per year.
We love to get nice feedback from our customers, here's what some of our customers said about us recently.
New: (5 out of 5 stars on Facebook ) "I had a wood burning stove installed last year and I bought my logs from Nick. My stove is only a very small one but the logs are cut small enough to fit. Nick piled up the logs in my shed. I like the bags as it makes it easy to store the logs and move them. I like that there is a mixture of wood in the bag - it is all well seasoned and burns really easily. I have tried to identify the wood - there is oak and birch and cherry but I'm not sure of the rest - I like to start my fire with birch and then use some oak when it gets going. I am very happy with the service and quality from Nick and have ordered from him again. Thank you." Mrs M. Benton, York, February 2016.
